Hello fellow Sorcerers,
The new set, Captain Baldassare's Travels, appears to take place in a world full of mystery, intrigue and hidden information. Some of the recent spoilers, such as Pass-plug Serpent and Snapjaw Raptor, carry a strong theme suprise attacks, using the power of existing mechanics such as Charge, Stealth and Burrowing. Moreover, in the process of releasing spoilers, the Sorcery team blurred out the name of one card in the upcoming Frostmage vs. Lavamancer pre-constructed decks. Curiously, even the means by which we slowly learn about Captain Baldassare's mysterious world are, themselves, ever so mysterious.
Recently, this blurred out card's name was revealed to be 'Spike Trap', a site introducing a new mechanic of Traps. Traps are all about hidden information. They are initially played face-down and are covered with a draft site, in order to reveal their elemental affinity, whilst keeping the card's true identity hidden. Your opponent must then decide whether they will risk their minions stepping onto this strange, face-down site.
Not only does the Trap mechanic center upon the theme of hidden information, it also signals that there is much, much more hidden information yet to be revealed to us. In order for the Trap mechanic to function as intended, there need to be many more Trap cards yet to come. Or else, another mechanic which likewise requires players to play sites face-down. Just one face-down site won't, I think, keep anyone's opponent guessing. There must be more information yet to be revealed to us by the Sorcery team.
Damn, that's a lot of hidden information! Is anyone else starting to get a headache?
In line with this exciting new theme, we've chosen to spotlight a card this month that similarly reflects the pain, and joy, of seeking out information.
This month, the spotlight falls on: Searing Truth
This is arguably one of Gothic's best exceptional cards, alongside fan favourites such as Swap and Toolbox. It allows a targeted player to draw and reveal two cards, and then take damage equal to the higher mana cost.
Card draw - or, information - is difficult to come by in Sorcery. Drawing two cards for three mana is a pretty good deal. Unless, of course, one of those two cards gives you a whopping 10 damage (Sorcery's highest mana cost yet).
What else do you think is yet to be revealed in Captain Baldassare's Travels? Will it be exciting and rewarding, or, will it be devastating? Let us know what your predictions are in the comments!
